Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate of dyes and pigments, by dehydrating a uniform liquid mixture of a β-naphthol alkali metal salt, β-naphthol, and a polyalkylbenzene under specific conditions keeping the liquid state, and then reacting wich carbon dioxide gas.
CONSTITUTION: A water-containing liquid mixture containing (A) an alkali metal salt of β-naphthol, (B) 0.6W1.25mols, pref. 0.7W1.0mol, based on 1mol of the component (A), of β-naphthol, and (C) 0.1W1.0pt.wt., pref. 0.3W0.8pt.wt., based on 1pt.wt. of the component (A), of a polyalkylbenzene of formula (R is different or same straight or branched chain 1W3C alkyl; n is 3W4), e.g. diisopropyltouene, is dehydrated with fractionating column pref. at 100W240°C, and the uniform anhydrous liquid mixture thus obtained is made to react with carbon dioxide gas to obtain the titled compound in high purity and yield (pref. the whole steps are carried out continuously).
