Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a carbonate useful as a synthetic intermediate for an agricultural chemical, etc. advantageously, by bringing an alcohol or water into contact with carbon dioxide in the presence of a diazabicycloalkene, and reacting the reaction product with an alkylating agent.
CONSTITUTION: An alcohol or water is reacted with carbon dioxide in the presence of a diazabicycloalkene, preferably, a compound expressed by the formula (n is an integer 2W11; m is an integer 2W6; either ring may have a lower alkyl substituent). The resultant reaction product is then reacted with an alkylating agent, e.g. a non- aromatic halide, to give a carbonate useful as an intermediate for an agricultural chemical or medicine and chemical, and a raw material or a modifying agent for high polymers under mild conditions close to normal temperature and pressure with almost to side reactions in high yield and purity.
