Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain methacrylonitrile and hydrocyanic acid simultaneously in high yield useful as a raw material for organic agents and for high polymer products, by subjecting methyl tertiary butyl ether and methanol to ammoxydation through gaseous phase contact.
CONSTITUTION: Methyl tertiary butyl ether is reacted with methanol, oxygen, and ammonia in the presence of a metal oxide catalyst (e.g., metal oxide catalyst containing molybdenum, bismuth, and antimony as essential ingredients) in high-temperature gaseous phase at 350W500°C, to give the titled compound. Hydrocyanic acid has a wide use as a raw material of methacrylate resin, and this method provides both methacrylonitrile and hydrocyanic acid in high yield and is satisfactory.
