Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the purity and yield of the titled substance useful as a synthetic intermediate for medicines, without forming by-products, by reducing cyanoacetylurea catalytically and rapidly in the presence of a strong acid and a very small amount of catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Cyanoacetylurea is catalytically reduced in the presence of a strong acid, e.g. hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, at 20W70°C, and then the temperature is preferably increased to complete the ring closure reaction and give the titled compound. In the reaction, an acid-resistant catalyst, e.g. the palladium or platinum type, is preferably used as the reduction catalyst. For example, the amount of the catalyst is about 1/50 of the raw material cyanoacelylurea in the case of 5% palladium carbon powder, and the reaction is completed at room temperature in a short time.
