Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound, a raw material for ethylene glycol useful as solvents, anti-freezes, and a raw material for polyesters, by reacting a lower olefin with molecular oxygen in acetic anhydride as a solvent in the presence of metallic silver.
CONSTITUTION: A lower aliphatic olefin, e.g. ethylene or propylene, is reacted with molecular oxygen in acetic anhydride in the presence of metallic silver to give an olefin oxide. The metallic silver may be in the reaction system, and a silver compound, e.g. a complex salt, before the charging into the system. The acetic anhydride may be used in a mixed solvent with benzene, acetone, or acetonitrile, at a concentration of 50vol.% or more. Pure oxygen or air may be used as the molecular oxygen. Nothing is limited about the reaction conditions.
