Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare styrene in high yield, while suppressing the corrosion of reactor by the reaction catalyst, by dehydrating α-phenylethyl alcohol in liquid phase using an organic sulfonic acid ester as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Styrene is produced by the liquid-phase dehydration reaction of α-phenylethyl alcohol in the presence of (pref. 0.1W2.0wt% of) an organic sulfonic acid ester (e.g. p-toluenesulfonic acid ethyl ester), pref. at 200W240°C. The organic sulfonate gives smaller amount of by-products and less corrosive reaction mixture than the conventional sulfonic acid catalyst. The α-phenylethyl alcohol is prepared by the successive oxidization and epoxidation of ethylbenzene.
