Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as a photochemical polymerization sensitizer, in high yield, without environment pollution, by the reaction of methyl orthoformate or orthosilicate, with a benzil, in the presence of an acidic catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Methyl orthoformate or orthosilicate is reacted with benzil in the presence of an acidic catalyst, e.g., p-toluenesulfonic acid or concentrated sulfuric acid, in an organic solvent, e.g. an alcohol like methanol, etc. while increasing the temperature until reflux, to give a benzyl-β-dimethyl ketal expressed by the formula.
