Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:3-Benzoylacetophenone of formulaI.
USE: Useful as an intermediate for preparing 2-(3-benzoylphenyl)-propionic acid useful acid useful as a medicine.
PROCESS: A compound of formula II (R3 and R4 are alkyl groups or together from a cyclic alkyl group) is reacted with benzaldehyde to give a secondary alcohol of formula III, which is then deacetalized with an acid, e.g. sulfuric acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid, in water or acetone solvent at 10W30°C to afford the compound of formulaI. The starting compound of formula II is obtained by reacting m-bromoacetophenone of formula IV with an alcohol in the presence of an acidic catalyst under the azeotropic conditions, and reacting the resultant acetal of formula V with metallic magnesium in an ethereal solvent.
