Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as an intermediate for medicines and pesticides advantageously, by thermal decomposition of a specific safe nonirritating compound, obtained through acylation of Meldrum's acid in high yield at low cost.
CONSTITUTION: An 5-acyl derivative of Meldrum's acid of formula I: (R1, R2, and R3 are lower alkyl groups) or its homolog is heated at a temperature above the melting point, usually 100W120°C, for 30minW1hr. The reaction mixture is cooled to room temperature and dissolved in a suitable organic solvent, washed with an aqueous alkali, water, etc., and dried. The solvent is distilled away to give an 4-alkyl-2,2-dialkyl-1,3-dioxene-6-one of formula II.
