Abstract

PURPOSE: A readily available raw material is used to effect the reaction under mild conditions to produce the titled compound which is used as an intermediate of 3,4,5- trimethoxybenzaldehyde, a starting material of medicines such as trimethoprim in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formulaI(R is methyl, ethyl), which is readily obtained by electrolysis of 3,4,5-trialkoxytoluene in high yield, is heated in a solvent such as water, methanol or acetic acid in the presence of a proton acid or Lewis acid at 20W50°C for 3W5hr to give the objective compound of formula II (R2 is H, methyl, ethyl, acetyl). The products vary depending on the combination of the solvent and the acid used; the combination of methanol, ethanol with a proton acid gives benzyl alkyl ether; water and a Lewis acid, benzyl alcohol, and acetic acid and a proton acid, benzyl acetate in high yields.
