Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as a raw material of an anti-ulcer agent, easily, in high yield, by heating nerolyl alkyl malonate and aluminum isopropoxide, and hydrolyzing and decarbonating the reaction product.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula IV is prepared by (1) reacting nerolyl acetate of formula I with lithium dialkylamide in an inert solvent such as tetrahydrofuran at -50W-80°C, (2) reacting the resulting lithium derivative with an alkyl chlorocarbonate to obtain a nerolyl alkyl malonate of formula II, (3) reacting the compound II with aluminum isopropoxide at 140W150°C in the absence of solvent, (4) hydrolyzing the resulting farnesylmalonic acid alkyl ester with an alkali to afford farnesylmalonic acid of formula III, and (5) decarbonating the compound III by heating, e.g. at 150°C under reduced pressure.
