EXAMPLE:1-(6-Methoxy-2-naphthyl)-2-hydroxy-1-propanone dimethylacetal. USE:An intermediate for safely producing alpha-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionic acid useful as an anti-inflammatory agent and analgesic agent in high yield and purity in a short time. PREPARATION:The compound of formula Ia is produced by reacting a compound of formula III (X is halogen) with a compound of formula R<1>OM (M is alkalis metal) in the presence of a compound of formula R<1>OH. The product can be converted to a compound of formula Ib by reacting with an O- sulfonylation agent. The above medicine of formula IV (R<4> is H or lower alkyl) can be easily produced by the hydrolysis of the compound of formula Ib.
