Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of medicines, e.g. 5-fluorouracil, in high yield, by reacting an alkoxymethylene malonic ester with urea in the presence of an acid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An alkoxymethylene malonic ester of formula I: (R and R' are alkyl groups) is reacted with urea in the presence of an acid catalyst to give a ureidomethylene malonic ester of formula II in a high yield ≥85%. An inorganic, organic, or Lewis acid may be used as the acid catalyst.
