Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound industrially advantageously, by oxidizing styrene in the presence of a specific catalyst in an aqueous solution of polyoxyethylene in an organic solvent, and by distilling the extract of the reaction product in the presence of an antioxidant in vacuo.
CONSTITUTION: (E) Styrene is oxidized in an aqueous sloution comprising (A) palladium (or its salt), (B) cupric chloride, (C) about 20W75wt% of a polyoxyethylene glycol of the formula (R1 and R2 are H or 1-5C alkyl groups; n is about 10W100), and (D) a water-insoluble organic solvent e.g. benzene, in a volume of 0.25W5.0 times that of (C). The resulting product is extracted from the reaction mixture, and distilled at 130°C or below in the presence of an antioxidant to give the objective compound. preferably, the concentrations of (A), (B), and total chloride ions are 0.01W0.5mol/l, 0.02W2.0mol/l, and 0.1W5g equivalents/l, respectively.
