Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A compound of the formula (R is alkyl or aralkyl).
EXAMPLE: 7-Methylcamptothecin.
USE: A medicine having a carcinostatic action and an intermediate therefor.
PROCESS: Camptothecin is radically reacted with a compound of the formula RX (X is -CH2OH, -COOH, -CHO, -CO-R, etc.), e.g. ethanol, acetaldehyde or acetone, in the presence of metallic ions, e.g. obtained by dissolving a metallic salt such as FeSO4 in water, by using sulfuric acid, water and a peroxide, e.g. H2O2, to give the compound of the formula. The compound of the formula RX is preferably used in a large excess, e.g. 20 times the molar amount of the camptothecin. The metallic salt and the peroxide are used in excess amounts, e.g. 5W8 times the molar amount of the camptothecin.
