Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A β,β,β-trihalo-α-hydroxyethyl substituted-2-aroyl-pyrrole derivative of formula I (R is lower alkyl group; Y is H, lower alkyl or alkoxy group, or halogen; X is Cl or Br).
EXAMPLE: 1-Methyl-2-(2,2,2-trichloro-1-hydroxyethyl)-5-p-toluoylpyrrole.
USE: A precursor for preparing an anti-inflammatory agent 1-methyl-5-aroylpyrrole- acetic acid.
PROCESS: An 2-aroylpyrrole derivative of formula II, e.g. 2-benzoyl-1-methyl-pyrrole, is reacted with a trihaloacetaldehyde in the presence of an acidic catalyst to form the compound of formulaI. Alternatively, a compound of formula III is reacted with a trihalomethane in the presence of a base.
