Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound useful as pesticides, medicines and raw materials of various chemicals, economically, by the ring-expansion of trithiocyclopropenium salt with o-phenylenediamine.
CONSTITUTION: A benzimidazole derivative of formula III [e.g. 2-(1,2-di-t-butylthiovinyl)-benzimidazole], is prepared by reacting a trithiocyclopropenium salt of formula I (R1 is lower alkyl; X- is anion), e.g. tri-t-butylthioclopropenium perchlorate, with an o-phenylenediamine derivative of formula II (Y is H or aprotic substitution group), e.g. o-phenylenediamine. [ring-expansion reaction of trithiocyclopropenium salt].
