PURPOSE: To carry out the hydrolysis of the nitrile group of a halogenophenyl- substituted aliphatic nitrile and the hydroxylation of the halogen substituted to the benzene nucleus, simultaneously in one step, and obtain the titled substance in high yield, by reacting the halogenophenyl-substituted aliphatic nitrile with an alkali in the presence of a copper salt.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula II useful as an intermediate of pharmaceuticals and pesticides can be prepared by reacting the halogenophenyl-substituted aliphatic nitrile of formulaI(X is halogen; R1 is H, lower alky, alkoxy or hydroxy; R2 and R3 are H or lower alkyl; m is 1W2; l and n are 0W2; excluding the case that m is 1 and l and n are 0) with an alkali in the presence of a copper salt such as cupric sulfate, cupric acetate, etc. at 100W300°C, preferably 150W250°C.
