Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound usefual as an important intermediate of anthraquinone dyes, in high yield and purity, by cyanizing a specific anthraquinone-sulfonic acid in the presence of a quaternary ammonium compound and a dehydrogenating agent.
CONSTITUTION: The anthraquinone-type intermediate of formula II[R is (substituted) alkyl or cycloalkyl]is prepared by reacting the compound of formulaI or its salt with a cyanizing agent in an aqueous medium in the presence of a dehydrogenating agent and a quaternary ammonium compound. The quaternary ammonium compound is preferably trimethylbenzyl ammonium chloride, etc., and the cyanizing agent is preferably sodium cyanide, etc. The reaction temperature is 50W100°C. The production of the by-product can be remarkably suppressed by the use of the quaternary ammonium compound. The quaternary ammonium compound can be recovered and reused after the reaction.
