Abstract

PURPOSE: To impart water resistance to gypsum obtained as a by-product of exhaust gas desulfurization, and to utilize the gypsum as a filler of paper, by treating gypsum dihydrate in an aqueous solution of a condensed phosphoric acid alkali of alkaline earth metal salt heated to a specific temperature, under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of a condensed phosphoric acid alkali or alkaline earth metal salt is heated at 50W90°C. Gypsum dihydrate e.g. obtained as a by-product of exhaust gas desulfurization, etc. is added to and dispersed in the solution and stirred, e.g. for 5min. The dispersed gypsum is separated by filtration. The molar ratio of the gypsum dihydrate to the condensed phosphoric acid is 1:(0.006W0.45), perf. 1:(0.01W0.3).
EFFECT: Since the product has a Mohs hardness of as low as 1W2, it can be used as a filler of paper giving low abrasion to the wire of a paper machine or a printing plate of a printer.
