Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain titled modified product, useful for acceleration of drainage, clarification of white water, etc. in paper making, by the reaction of a polyacrylamide with a hypohalogenous acid salt, in the presence of a product of the reaction of two organic N compounds in an alkaline region.
CONSTITUTION: A polyacrylamide is reacted with a hypohalogenous acid salt, in an aqueous alkaline solution containing a compound of formula I (wherein R1 and R2 are a lower alkyl; R3 is a lower alkyl or formula II: X1 is an anion: m is an integer of 1W5) and a compound of formula III (wherein R4 and R5 are a lower alkyl: R6 is a lower alkyl or formula II: X2 is an anion: Y is Cl, Br or I: n is an integer of 1W5), or in an aqueous alkaline solution containing a product of the reaction of said two compounds in an alkaline region. Thereby a water-soluble product is obtained, which is a cation-modified polyacrylamide, excellent in acceration of drainage increase in filler yield, clarification of whilt wate, etc., and useful as an additive for paper.
