Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an aromatic amino compound from the corresponding aromatic nitro compound in a high yield and purity, by reducing the nitro compound with a hydrazine compound in the presence of a catalyst consisting mainly of iron oxide, hydroxide, or their mixture.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic nitro compound, e.g. p-nitro-toluene, etc. is reduced with a hydrozine compound, e.g. hydrozine hydrate, etc. in the presence of a catalyst consisting mainly of an iron oxide, hydroxide, e.g. ferric oxyhydroxide, etc., or their mixture to give an aromatic amino compound, e.g. p-toluidine, etc. The catalyst is obtained by neutralizing and precipitating an aqueous ferrie sulfate solution with an aqueous alkali solution at about 35°C or below and pH 3.8W9.0. Preferably, the catalyst contains about 0.1 or more gram atom per mole of nitro group in the aromatic nitro compound of iron.
EFFECT: Repeated use of the catalyst is possible with its easy preparation and recovery
