Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a carbon catalyst for SO3/SO2 conversion having high flame resistance and a long life by impregnating a carbon material with a mixed soln. of phosphoric acid and a water soluble metal salt capable of forming a highly heat resistant inorg. compound by reaction with phosphoric acid followed by heating at a predetermined temp. in an inert gas atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: A carbon material such as carbon black is impregnated with a mixed soln. of phosphoric acid and a water soluble metal salt such as aluminum sulfate capable of forming a highly heat resistant inorg. compound by reaction with phosphoric acid. The mixed soln. is an aqueous soln. contg. the salt and phosphoric acid in 1:0.5W1:5 molar ratio. The impregnated carbon material is then activated by heating at 500W1,000°C in an atmosphere of an inert gas such as N2. This heat treatment is preferably carried out after separating the soln. from the impregnated material by filtration and drying the material at about 150°C in an atmosphere of an inert gas such as N2.
