Abstract

PURPOSE: Odor components are effectively removed from stinking gas containing NH3 or amines and H2S by contacting said gas with an acitve carbon carrying one or more of Ti, Zr, Nb, Mo and W in the presence of O2.
CONSTITUTION: An active carbon is impregnated or sprayed with a solution or suspension of metal oxides of Ti, Zr, Nb, Mo and W, or compounds thereof capable of being transformed into said oxides by firing. The treated active carbon is dried by heating, or fired if required, to be formed into a metal-containing active carbon, through which is passed a bad smelling gas containing NH3 or amines and H2S at 0W150°C and SV 50W50000 hr-1. In this process, H2S is oxidized into H2SO4, which then reacts with NH3 or amines to form sulfates to be absorbed into the active carbon. When an amount of H2S is insufficient for producing sulfates, SO2 gas is added to the gas to be treated. For catalyst regeneration, the active carbon is washed at 20W90°C with water two times by weight of the active carbon.
