Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain cysteamine in high yield industrially advantageously, by reacting ethyleneimine with hydrogen sulfide at a specific reaction pressure, temperature, and molar ratio of hydrogen sulfide to ethyleneimine in a monohydric lower alcohol as a solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Ethyleneimine (E) is reacted with hydrogen sulfide (S) in the presence of a lower monohydric alcohol, e.g. methanol or ethanol, as a solvent at -10W+40°C, 1.5kg/cm2G or above, and a molar ratio of S to E≥1.5:1 to give cysteamine with a markedly suppressed by-product sulfide formation. This method provides the product industrially advantageously compared with the conventional one, wherein the reaction is carried out at a low temperature of -70W-80°C or a solvent is used in a large quantity.
