Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound at an improved reaction rate and conversion in high yield, by reacting isobutylene with water in the presence of a porous acid cation exchange resin and a sulfone at a specific temperature or below selectively.
CONSTITUTION: Isobutylene in a 4C hydrocarbon mixture is reacted with water selectively in the presence of a porous acid cation exchange resin and a sulfone at 100°C or below, particularly 40W100°C, to give the aimed compound. A sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer having a surface area of 0.5W200m2/g and an exchange capacity of 2W5meq/g may be cited as the suitable porous exchange resin, and the sulfone, e.g. sulfolane, sulfolene or diethyl sulfone, is used in an aqueous mixture in a concentration of 50W97wt%. The molar ratio of water to isobutylene is 1:1W10:1, and the reaction is carried out at such a pressure as to keep the 4C hydrocarbon mixture in a liquid state.
