Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain th titled substance useful as a raw material for the preparation of pharmaceuticals or perfumes, under mild conditions, with easy separation of the reaction catalyst, by isomerizing styrene oxide in a solvent or without solvent, using an acid-type ion-exchange resin as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of the titled substance by the isomerization of styrene oxide, an acid-type ion-exchange resin is used as a catalyst. The cation exchange resin is pref. a strongly acidic resin or those having higher acidity. Especially, a fluorocarbon polymer having sulfonic groups is especially desirable because of its excellent reactivity and selectivity, as well as the extremely excellent heat resistance, acid resistance, alkali resistance, abrasion resistance, etc. The amount of the catalyst is 0.01W1pt.wt. per 1pt.wt. of styrene oxide. The reaction is usually carried out in a solvent (e.g. THF); however, it can be conducted in the absence of solvent or in gaseous phase. When the reaction is carried out in a solvent, the concentration of the unreacted raw material is pref. controlled at a low level (0.3W 1wt%).
