Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:Fluorinated acid fluoride of formula I (p is 3W5; n is 0W50).
EXAMPLE: Perfluoro-6-fluorosulfonyl-3-oxa-2-methylhexanoyl fluoride of formula II.
USE: A raw material for producing fluorinated cation exchange membranes for the electrolysis of aqueous alkali metal halide. The thermal decomposition of the compound gives a fluorinated vinyl ether monomer, which is copolymerized together with a fluorinated olefin such as tetrafluoroethylene to give a copolymer with high thermal and chemical stability. The copolymer is made into a film, which is chemically treated to give the above cation exchange membrane with increased ion- exchange capacity.
PREPARATION: A compound of formula IV is made to react with hexafluoropropylene oxide in the presence of fluoride ion to give the compound of formula I.
