Abstract
PURPOSE: To isomerize 3,4-diacetoxybutene-1 to 1,4-diacetoxybutene-2, or vice versa, useful as a raw material of 1,4-butanediol or a modifier of vinyl polymers, in high yield, by contacting the raw material with a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: 3,4-Diacetoxybutene-1 or 1,4-diacetoxybutene-2 is converted to 1,4-diacetoxybutene-2 or 3,4-diacetoxybutene-1, respectively, by contacting with a cation exchange resin. The isomerization reaction can be remarkably accelerated by the presence of acetic acid. The ion exchange resin used as the catalyst, is pref. a strongly acidic cation exchange resin, especially a sulfonic acid-type strongly acidic ion exchange resin composed mainly of a copolymer of styrene and divinylbenzene.
