Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an additive for various applications, in high yield and selectivity, by reacting a lower alcohol continuously with a preliminary reaction product of sorbitol and benzaldehyde compound in the presence of a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The homogeneous liquid obtained by the preliminary reaction of sorbitol (SB), a benzaldehyde compound (BA) and a lower alcohol (ROH) in a preliminary reactor 2, is charged continuously into the reactor 3 together with a hydrocarbon reaction medium S (e.g. cyclohexane, alkyl-substituted cyclohexane, etc.), and reacted to obtain the titled compound. The reaction temperature is pref. about 65W140°C. The vapor generated by heating is condensed with a cooler 6 and separated into the reaction medium, the lower alcohol and water in a decanter 7. The reaction medium is recycled to the reaction system. The lower alcohol acts not only as an initiator of the preliminary reaction but also as a reaction accelerator.
