Abstract
PURPOSE: Using slufolane or alkylene carbonate as a solvent, the reaction between isobutylene and water is effected in the presence of a cation exchange resin, thus producing tertiary butyl alcohol selectively in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: In the production of tertiary butyl alcohol by reaction between hydrocarbons containing isobutylene (spent C4 fraction is suitably used) and water in the presence of a cation exchange resin in a solvent, sulfolane or an alkylene carbonate is employed. The weight ratio of the solvent to the hydrocarbons containing isobutylene is 1W10. The use of sulfonlane or ethylene carbonate is preferred. The cation exchange resin is, e.g., preferably sulfonic acid type.
EFFECT: The rate of hydration reaction increases.
