Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound advantageously from inexpensive raw materials, by reacting inexpensive m-phenoxybenzyl chloride with m-phenoxybenzal chloride under specific conditions, and oxidizing the resultant reaction product with nitric acid in a specified concentration in the presence of a sulfonic acid type anionic surfactant.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of m-phenoxybenzyl chloride with m-phenoxybenzal chloride is reacted in the presence of a carbonate or bicarbonate of sodium, potassium or calcium and water at 130W250°C under pressure to give a mixture of m- phenoxybenzyl alcohol with m-phenoxybenzaldehyde. The resultant mixture is then reacted with a 1W10wt% nitric acid in the presence of a sulfonic acid type anionic surfactant to give m-phenoxybenzaldehyde useful as an intermediate for synthetic pyrethroid insecticides in high purity and yield.
