CONSTITUTION: 4W6C Isoolefin is reacted with water. The reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst of a strong acid type cation exchange resin and a glycol in a molar ratio of water to isoolefin not more than 0.8:1, preferably 0.04:1W 0.7:1, to give the corresponding tertiary alcohol and a glycol ether. An amount of the glycol to be used is an amount to form a water and an oily layers. The reaction rate is high, the conversion and utilization efficiency of the isoolefin are high. The glycol is converted to a glycol monoether to be used as a water-soluble solvent, etc. The water content of a formed mixture is small, and the separation and purification of the formed mixture become easy.
