1501327 Glycol ethers TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 26 June 1976 26723/76 Heading C2C A method of preparing glycol ethers by heating a reaction mixture containing an alkylene oxide and an alcohol at 50-350‹ C., 30-3000 p.s.i.g., in the presence of a catalyst containing alkali or alkaline earth cations is characterized by the use as some or all of the catalyst of an anhydrous high boiling liquid residue containing catalytically active alcoholates of alkali or alkaline earth metals prepared by concentrating the liquid residue left after removal of the glycol ether from the reaction product of the same or a different etherification process involving reacting an alkylene oxide and an alcohol with an alkaline catalyst at the said temperature and pressure. The alkylene oxide preferably contains 2-4 carbon atoms and the alcohol is preferably a saturated aliphatic monohydric alcohol of 1-4 carbon atoms. The concentration may be carried out for example at 100-130‹ C., 5-6 mmHg, and the concentrated residue preferably contains at least 9% by weight of the alkali (calculated as metal hydroxide); the metal may be sodium or potassium. In examples ethylene oxide is used with methanol, ethanol and n-butanol, and the products obtained are the mono-alkyl ethers of mono-, di-, tri- and tetra-ethylene glycol.
