Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a monoalkylene glycol economically, in high conversion and selectivity, by reacting an alkylene oxide with water in the presence of CO2 using a catalyst comprising a compound of an alkali metal and an organic acid, at a low temperature.
CONSTITUTION: Alkylene glycols composed mainly of a monoalkylene glycol are prepared by reacting an alkylene oxide (e.g. ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, etc.) with water in the presence of CO2 using a catalyst comprising a compound of an alkali metal and an organic acid (e.g. sodium formate, potassium acetate, sodium malate, etc.). The reaction temperature is 20W250°C, pref. 50W200°C. The alkylene oxide can be converted completely to the alkylene glycol at a relatively low reaction temperature with very little production of polyalkylene glycols.
