Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound such as methanol, ethylene glycol, methyl formate, etc., in high yield, even at a low temperature, by reacting CO with H2 in liquid phase using a catalyst comprising a combination of a copper compound other than copper oxide and an alkali metal alkoxide.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound such as methanol, ethylene glycol, etc. is prepared by reacting CO with H2 at 40W185°C under a pressure of 20W 150kg/cm2 using a catalyst comprising a combination of (a) a copper compound other than copper oxide and (b) an alkali metal alkoxide and if necessary an alkali metal carboxylate. The molar ratio of alkali metal alkoxide/copper compound is pref. 3W50 to increase the amount of the product. The catalyst is prepared by compounding 0.0001W10mol of the copper compound and 0.001W10mol of the alkali metal alkoxide to 1l of the reaction medium.
EFFECT: The removal of the reaction heat and the separation of the product can be carried out easily, and the circulation of a large amount of unreacted gas is not necessary.
