Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of various reactions, economically, in high yield, by the three-step reaction of ethylene chlorohydrin and epichlorohydrin, wherein the third step reaction is carried out in a specific solvent under specific reaction conditions.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene chlorohydrin of formula I is reacted with epichlorohydrin of formula II to afford a compound of formula III, which is made to react in the second step reaction with an alkali (pref. an alkali metal hydroxide) as a dehydrochlorinating agent to yield a compound of formula IV and then a compound of formula V (the third step reaction). The third step reaction is carried out at 150W 200°C in a solvent having a boiling point of 160W200°C and capable of dissolving at least a part of said alkali at the reaction temperature, by supplying the compound of formula IV little by little to the reaction system and distilling out the products from the reaction system. By this process, the titled compound of formula V can be prepared in high yield, in an industrial scale, from low-cost raw materials.
