Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a glycolic acid ester in high selectivity, by reacting formaldehyde, an oxy-Brnsted acid alkyl ester and CO in the presence of a strong acid catalyst, and if necessary, decomposing the product with an alkali.
CONSTITUTION: A glycolic acid ester and a glycolic acid ether can be prepared in high selectivity, by charging formaldehyde, an oxy-Brnsted acid alkyl ester and a strong acid catalyst in a reactor, introducing CO at a pressure of 10W 150kg/cm2, reacting the components with each other at 50W200°C, and subjecting the product to the alcoholysis with excess alcohol or to the hydrolysis in the presence of water. The oxy-Brnsted acid ester is, e.g p-toluenesulfonic acid methyl ester dimethyl phosphite, trimethyl phosphat, etc. The production ratio of the ester to the ether can be controlled by the proper selection of the Brnsted acid ester.
USE: Industrial intermediate of glycolic acid, ethylene glycol, etc.
