Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a polyester of high polymerization degree having good thermal stability without discoloration in a short time, by adding a specific phosphorus compound to the reaction system in the presence of a glycol-soluble tungsten compound as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: In preparing a polyester from terephthalic acid or a dicarboxylic acid (ester-forming derivative) consisting of the terephthalic acid essentially and ethylene glycol or a glycol consisting of the ethylene glycol (ester-forming derivative) essentially, a glycol-soluble tungsten compound as a catalyst in an amount of 0.2× 10-4W5×10-4mol/mol an acid component consituting the polyester is used, and a phsphorus compound expressed by the formula (R1 is H or lower alkyl; R2 is H, lower alkyl or OH) in an amount of 0.2×10-4W10×10-4mol/mol the acid component constituting the polyester is added to the system.
