Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce a high-polymerization degree polyester excellent in transparency and color, by reacting terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol in the presence of a sulfocarboxylic acid anhydride catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Terephthalic acid or a terephthalic acid-based polyfunctional carboxylic acid(esterifiable derivative) is polycondensed with ethylene glycol or an ethylene glycol-based glycol in the presence of 0.1×10-4W20×10-4mol, per mol of the acid component constituting the polyester, of a sulfocarboxylic acid anhydride catalyst represented by the formula, wherein Ar is an aromatic group, X is R1 or OR2, R1 is a lower alkyl, R2 is H or a lower alkyl, m is 0W3 and n is 1W2 and in the absence of a catalytically effective amount of a metal compound.
