Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound, useful as an improver of polyester resins etc., in high conversion without corrosion of the apparatus, by hydration of dicyclopentadiene using an F-containing polymeric compound having ion exchange ability as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Dicyclopentadiene is hydrated at 50-200 deg.C, esp. 80-150 deg.C, in a solvent, e.g. ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, in the presence of a catalyst comprising a polymer having the group of formula I (Y is acid group; R is F or perfluoroalkyl), preferably a polymer having the atructure of formual II (K=1 or 2; x and y are about 2-50) to give the titled compound. The amount of water is 1- 50mol, preferably 5-15mol per 1mol of the dicyclopentadiene and that of the catalyst is preferably 10-70wt% based on the amount of water and dicyclopentadiene.
