Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare an aldehyde by the hydroformylation of an olefin under relatively mild conditions, in the presence of a catalyst comprising a cobaltcarbonyl cluster compound which can be separated from the reaction product and recycled to the reaction system.
CONSTITUTION: An aldehyde is prepared by the hydroformylation of an olefin at 80W180°C and 10W100kg/cm2, in the presence of a solvent, using a catalyst comprising a cobaltcarbonyl cluster compound of the formula (R is H, hydrocarbyl, halogen) having a substituted C atom, and having a tetrahedral structure composed of three Co atoms and one C atom. When the reaction is carried out at 90W120°C, the amounts of by-products (alkanes, alcohols, etc.) can be remarkably reduced. The selectivity to the straight chain aldehyde depends upon the substitution group of the C atom of the catalyst.
