Abstract

PURPOSE: In the sulfonation of benzene or lower alkylbenzene with sulfur trioxide, a sulfonation retarder along with a lower alkyl alchol as methanol are added to the reaction system to prevent side reactions, thereby producing the corresponding sulfonic acid in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: In the sulfonation of benzene or a lower monoalkylbenzene of the formula (R is alkyl with 0W4 carbon atoms)as ethylbenzene with sulfur trioxide, a sulfonation retarder, preferably acetic acid, along with a lower aliphatic alcohol of R'-OH (R' is 1W4C alkyl) are added to the reaction system. The amount of the alcohol added is 1W4 wt% based on the lower alkylbenzene.
EFFECT: The effect of the sulfonation retarder is increased to supress the formation of by-products and improve the product yield.
