Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:α-Hydroxy-α-(2,7-octadienyl)carbonyl compounds of formula I (R1 and R2 are H or hydrocarbon residue or R1 and R2 together may form a ring).
EXAMPLE: 3-Methyl-3-hydroxyundeca-trans-5,10-dien-2-one.
USE: Intermediate of functional compounds, e.g. pharmaceuticals, pesticides, perfumes, etc. Various kinds of reactions generally known can be carried out with each functional group. Also the long carbon chains can give desired physical properties to the products.
PROCESS: An α-hydroxycarbonyl compound of formula II is made to react with butadiene in the presence of a Pd-sulfinic acid catalyst to give a compound of formula I safely, inexpensively, easily and in high yield. This method is widely applicable for the carbon extension reaction, and it can greatly reduce the preparing steps of e.g. prostaglandins.
