Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare the title compound, useful as a solvent for acrylic resin paint, continuously, by reacting ethyl acetate with an excess amount of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, and recovering and recycling the starting materials from the reaction mixture using specific distillation processes. CONSTITUTION:Ethyl acetate, an excess amount of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, and recovered glycol are supplied into a feed tank A, and made to react in a reaction vessel B at <=100 deg.C. The reaction mixture is distilled in a first distillation column C to recover ethyl acetate and ethanol as an azeotropic mixture from the top of the column and to take out the non-azeotropic ethanol from the intermediate stage 6 of the column. The non-azeotropic ethanol is distilled in a second distillation column D and a third distillation column E to recover ethanol. On the other hand, the unreacted ethylene glycol monoethyl ether is recovered from the intermediate stage 10 of the first distillation column C, and the objective ethylene glycol monoethyl ether acetate is obtained from the bottom 12 of the column C.
