Abstract

PURPOSE: To minimize the energy required for the separation of the titled compounds, by subjecting a mixture of methyl acetate and methanol to the extraction distillation and the azeotropic distillation, and feeding the bottom liquid of the azeotropic distillation column to the top of the distillation column of methanol- water mixture.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of methyl acetate and methanol containing smaller amount of water is fed to an azeotropic distillation column 9, and the one containing higher amount of water to an extraction distillation column 3, and distilled under reflux. A mixture of 80.5% of methyl acetate and 19.5% of methanol is distilled off from the top of the column 9, and a highly concentrated methyl acetate is obtained from the top of the column 3. A mixture of methanol and water is extracted from the bottom of the column 3 and sent to a water-methanol separator column 14. The bottom liquid (highly concentrated methanol) of the azeotropic distillation column 9 is fed to the top or between the top and the 15th stage (the higher the better) of the separator column 14, and distilled under reflux to separate methanol from water.
