Abstract
1,199,120. Sephrating methanol from methyl acetate. PHONE-POULENC S.A. 11 Dec., 1968 [12 Dec., 1967], No. 58946/68. Heading C2C. A process for the separation of methanol from a crude mixture thereof with methyl acetate containing non-volatile materials and optionally water, such as is obtained in the manufacture of polyvinyl alcohol by methanolysis of polyvinyl acetate, the methanol constituting at least 25% of the combined weight of methanol and methyl acetate comprises: feeding the said mixture to a first fractionation column heated by direct injection of steam; removing an essentially anhydrous mixture of the methanol and methyl acetate as vapour overhead from the said column and liquid water containing the said non-volatile materials from the foot of the said column; feeding the said mixture of methanol and methyl acetate from the said first column to a second fractionation column; removing an azeotropic mixture of methanol and methyl acetate overhead from the second column and a first fraction of essentially pure liquid methanol from the foot of the said second column; feeding the said azeotropic mixture of methanol and methyl acetate to a third fractionation column in which the said mixture is contacted with liquid water; removing a liquid mixture of water and methanol essentially free from methyl acetate from the foot of the said third column and a mixture of water and methyl acetate essentially free from methanol as overhead from the said third column; and rectifying the said liquid mixture of water and methanol from the said third column to separate a second fraction of substantially pure methanol therefrom. If the mixture is anhydrous, it is fed to the top of the first column and if it contains water, preferably to an intermediate point. The first column should be designed to avoid clogging with solid impurities.
