Abstract

PURPOSE: To hydroformylate a vinyl carboxylate industrially and advantageously, by the extractive separation of the aimed product from the reaction mixture with an aqueous medium in the presence of a rhodium complex compound as a chief catalyst, and the recycle of the catalytic component in the residue layer after the extraction through the reaction stage.
CONSTITUTION: A compound expressed by formula I (R is methyl or ethyl) is reacted with a hydrogen-carbon monoxide mixture gas in an organic solvent in the presence of a rhodium complex compound which is substantially insoluble in water and a phosphine. The resultant reaction mixture solution is extracted with an aqueous medium, and a compound of formula II is separated into said aqueous medium layer. The residue layer after the extraction containing the catalytic component is recycled through the reaction stage. The compound of formula II may be separated readily and effectively from the reaction mixture in three stages, and the catalytic activity may be maintained at a satisfactory level. The elution of rhodium into the aqueous medium is reduced to an extremely small amount, and a compound expressed by formula II useful as a raw material for lactic acid, etc. can be obtained advantageously.
