Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:Exo-5-methyl-endo-2,3-trimethylene norbornane of formula I.
USE: Raw material of methyladamantane. It can be isomerized to methyladamantane in high yield, using an acid catalyst.
PROCESS: The compound I is prepared by irradiating exo-5-bromomethyl-endo-2,3- trimethylene norbornane II with light, in an inert solvent such as n-pentane or n- hexane, in the presence of an aliphatic tertiary amine such as trimethylamine, dimethylcyclohexyl-amine, etc. The compound II, which is a novel compound, can be prepared easily, by reacting exo-5-hydroxymethyl-endo-2,3-trimethylene norbornane with phosphorus tribromide, under the condition for the bromination reaction of an alcohol. The inert solvent for the first reaction is not reactive to the raw material II and is to be highly transparent to the radiation.
