Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound from ethylene glycol and a tert-olefin, by using an iron apparatus in the purification process thereby preventing the decomposition of the product and the tert-alcohol, removing iron from iron-containing recovered ethylene glycol by evaporation, and recycling the purified ethylene glycol.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of the high purity objective compound by the reaction of ethylene glycol with a tert-olefin in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin catalyst followed by the purification of the reaction product by distillation, the decomposition of the product and the tert-alcohol in the purification process caused by the acidic substance eluted from the strongly acidic cation exchange resin catalyst is prevented by using an iron material to at least a part of the apparatuses of the purification process. Iron is removed from the crude ethylene glycol recovered as the bottom residue of the distillation column by evaporating the ethylene glycol, and the purified ethylene glycol is recycled as a part of the reaction raw material.
